Getting Calls, Part 1 Print E-mail

Your job search toolbox is stocked and ready to use; it's filled with a well-researched target list, a dynamite resume, and a customized cover letter. Now it's time to get results for all of your hard work!

Recently, I bought a pair of shoes from an online retailer. Typically ordering shoes is a traumatic experience for me. I have big feet (I won't embarrass myself by going into details), and finding shoes is usually frustrating, often resulting in my settling for something I really don't like. So ordering online seemed like a long shot, but I decided to give it a try, halfway expecting the experience to be a dismal failure.

But this shopping experience turned out to be a "Wow!" experience! For starters, the retailer's Web page was attractive and easy to navigate, with fun, encouraging shopper messages like, "Your order is almost complete. Just one more step!" And when I received my new shoes (I loved them, by the way, and they fit great), I was delighted to discover a handwritten note in the box from the service representative saying, "Hopeyou love these!" Bottom line, I was completely jazzed by this shoe-buying adventure.

Looking back, the little extra steps the shoe company took weren't that big of a dealmaking sure that its Web site was well organized, providing me encouraging messages as I placed my order, and including a small handwritten note. But from my perspective, they made a huge difference. .one that has motivated me to shop with that company a number of times since.

With just a little extra time and effort, you can create the same kind of "Wow!" experience for potential employers, as you prepare and submit your applications, and generate more interviews as a result.
