How to Create Your Cover Letter, Part 5 Print E-mail

After observing the results of thousands of job hunters, I've discovered that most people devote the majority of their time to creating cover letters and resumes. Although writing effective resumes and cover letters is an important activity, it certainly doesn't deserve to receive the majority of your job search effort.

Within my career counseling circle of professionals, we refer to spending an excessive amount of time and effort on job search documents as "Polishing the brochure," meaning that instead of using your resumes and cover letters as useful tools to move you forward, you get caught in the trap of trying to make them perfect and miss out on many valuable opportunities as a result.

By using a proven approach to creating cover letters, requiring you to invest a minimum of time and effort, you will be able to achieve more of what you want in your job search and career.

Writing effective letters to support your job search can seem overwhelming. How do you communicate your best qualities in a concise, compelling letter, while also motivating the decision maker to call you for an interview? Yikeswhat pressure! Rather than make yourself crazy attempting to achieve this near-impossible feat, it makes sense to stick with a proven approach, devoting your time to filling in the details that are relevant to you. Will it feel strange, trying a different approach? Probably...but give it a go, and see how it works for you.
